Your recordings stay on your phone.
TathyaLabs collects nothing through the app. It has no account, no servers, no analytics, no ads and no tracking. Your recordings and transcripts are stored only on your phone and leave it only when you share them, back them up to a folder you choose, or turn on server recognition for a language your phone can’t transcribe on its own. Tap Record: Voice Recorder on Google Play and Recorder by Tathya on the App Store are the same app, and this page covers both.

The short version
- No account, no sign-up and no TathyaLabs servers. The app makes no network requests of its own.
- No analytics, no crash-reporting SDK, no ads and no tracking.
- Transcription uses the speech engine built into your phone. Server recognition is off by default.
- Recordings are not location-tagged. The app never asks for your location, contacts, camera or photos.
What the app stores, and where
Recordings (audio files), transcripts, bookmarks, titles, folders and settings are stored inside the app on your phone. TathyaLabs never receives them and cannot see them. Deleted recordings stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days so you can restore them, unless you delete them sooner.
Like other app data, what the app stores may be included in your phone’s own backups if you have them turned on: an iCloud or computer backup on iPhone, or Android’s backup to your Google account. Those backups are controlled by you and Apple or Google; TathyaLabs cannot access them.
The microphone
The app uses the microphone only while you record. Recording can continue with the screen locked or while you use other apps: on iPhone through background audio, on Android through a foreground service that keeps a notification on screen while it records. The app never records unless you start it.
Transcription
- The app turns recordings into text with the speech engine built into your phone: Apple’s Speech framework on iPhone, and Google’s on-device speech recognition on Android (Android 13 or later). When the language you choose is available on the device, the audio never leaves your phone.
- On iPhone, Apple requires Speech Recognition permission even for on-device transcription. The app asks for it only to transcribe.
- Server recognition is off by default. If you choose a language your phone can’t transcribe on the device, the app tells you and sends nothing. Only if you turn on Allow Apple server recognition (iPhone) or Allow server recognition (Android) in Settings is the audio of the recording you are transcribing sent to Apple or Google for transcription, under Apple’s privacy policy or Google’s privacy policy. TathyaLabs never receives it. Transcripts made this way are labelled SERVER, and you can turn the setting off at any time.
- On Android, if an on-device language model is missing, the app can ask Google to download it when you tap Download model.
When your data leaves the phone (only when you choose)
- Share and export: audio, transcripts (.txt), subtitles (.srt, .vtt) or notes (.md) go to the app or person you pick in the system share sheet.
- Back up to Files: copies your recordings, transcripts and a readable text version into a folder you choose, on your phone, in a cloud drive or on a USB drive. Where that folder syncs is up to you and that provider. Restore from backup reads a backup folder you pick.
- Import audio: copies an audio file you pick into the app.
- Shortcut links (
tathyarecorder://) only start, stop or open the app; they carry no data.
Contacting us
If you email us from the app or this website, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and use them only to reply. Please don’t send us recordings unless you want us to look at a problem with one. If you rate the app, the rating screen is shown by the App Store or Google Play, and we see only what you choose to post there.

Retention and deletion
Your recordings stay on your phone until you delete them. Deleted recordings stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days unless you empty it. Settings › Delete all data permanently deletes every recording, transcript, folder and setting from the phone, and deleting the app deletes everything it stored. Files you shared or backed up stay where you put them.
